In an effort by the local council to reduce the increasing number of noise complaints made by residents in and around the popular Holylands area, financial incentives are being offered to residents who successfully report a noisy neighbour, this includes food and gift vouchers. This new measure has drawn mixed responses from residents in the area, with one describing it as "pure desperation". Some people believe this new measure will result in residents purposely creating noise, only for a friend to report them and then proceed to split the cash reward amongst themselves. This new idea by the local council will run under a trial scheme for 12 weeks to measure its effectiveness before deciding whether it should be a permanent measure that will be rolled out across more student areas.
